The Helen Mirren Effect
If ever an argument were needed in defence of older women (not that there need be one…), I give you Helen Mirren.
Mirren (age 69 at the time of this writing) is a poster child for sexual ooze. She’s always had it. You can see it from her early work to the present day. My fave is The Cook, The Thief, His Wife, and Her Lover, which gives me a particular shudder in my gullywots when she points a loaded pistol while delivering the line, “Try the cock.”
Granted, we don’t all have an Oscar on the mantle. But here’s Mirren’s secret:
Unlike most women, she refuses to accept such a thing as a “best before” date.
Too many older women — forget the 69-year-olds, I’m talking as young as 50 — feel their time has passed. No matter how sexy they may have once been, they feel it’s inappropriate to still be in the game. How ridiculous. You can’t turn off sexy, nor should you. If you feel sexy, chances are you’re sexy. If you feel confident, chances are you’re confident.
Mirren isn’t sexy and confident because she’s a movie star — it’s the other way around. When women like her walk into a room, heads turn. Energy is concentrated. For fucksakes, even women are attracted to that kind of power.
I challenge any guy to withstand the allure of such an older woman. I can’t believe for one second they wouldn’t be snared by The Mirren Effect. Imagine someone like her flirting, touching, smiling. You couldn’t help but melt quicker than cheese whiz.
Older women have confessed to me, “Why can’t I be like her?” You are. Or can be. Sure, if confidence and sexuality were never on your playlist then that’s a different story. But if you “got it”, then trust me, you never lose it. Don’t let gravity and wrinkles hold you back, ladies.
And know this: any guy who doesn’t recognize it in you isn’t worth your time anyway.
(For the record, the same goes for Susan Sarandon and Jane Fonda: if you don’t think they’re sexy, then you need a brain-transplant.)
